Renting a Porta Potty During a Bathroom Remodel

When your only bathroom is gutted, a porta potty in the driveway keeps the house livable. Here is how long to rent, where to put it and who should book it.

Do I need a porta potty if my only bathroom is being remodeled?

A porta potty is the simplest fix when a home has 1 bathroom and the toilet is pulled out for a remodel. The family and the crew both need somewhere to go. A single standard unit in the driveway covers a typical household of 2 to 5 people.

Many older homes in Manchester and nearby towns have only one full bathroom. Once demo starts, the toilet is often the first thing out.

Without a backup, you are driving to a gas station at 2 AM. A rented unit in the driveway keeps daily life going.

For more comfort, a deluxe flushing unit adds a sink and a flushing toilet. That is a nice upgrade for kids or older family members.

Book the unit for the day before demo. That way nobody is caught without a toilet on the first morning of work.

How long does a bathroom remodel usually take?

A full bathroom remodel usually takes 3 to 6 weeks from demo to a working toilet. Simple updates may take 1 to 2 weeks. Delays from tile, plumbing inspections or back-ordered fixtures are common, so plan your porta potty rental for at least one 28-day cycle.

Ask your contractor two questions: when will the toilet come out, and when will it go back in? That window is how long you need the unit.

Project typeTypical time without a toilet
Fixture swap or vanity update1–3 days
New tile floor and toilet reset1–2 weeks
Full gut remodel3–6 weeks
Remodel with moved plumbing6–10 weeks

For a very short job, a short event-style rental may work. For anything longer than a week, long-term billing is usually the better fit.

Where should the porta potty go in my driveway?

Place a remodel porta potty on a level part of the driveway, within about 15 feet of where the service truck can park. Keep it out of the path of the contractor's dumpster and trucks. Most homeowners set it near the side of the garage or house for privacy.

The pump truck hose has limited reach. A spot close to the street or driveway edge makes weekly service quick.

  • Pick flat pavement or firm gravel. Soft lawn can sink after rain.
  • Leave room for the dumpster drop and pickup.
  • Face the door toward the house, not the street.
  • Keep it out of a plow path if the job runs into winter.

You do not need to be home for delivery. Mark the spot and the driver will text or call about 30 minutes before arrival.

Should the contractor or the homeowner rent the porta potty?

Either the contractor or the homeowner can rent the porta potty. Many contractors include a unit in their bid for every job. If yours does not, the homeowner can book it directly. Agree on this in writing before demo day so you do not end up with 2 units or none.

Contractors often have a business account and get invoiced. Homeowners usually pay by card when booking.

Things to settle with your contractor:

  1. Who books the unit and who pays.
  2. The delivery date, ideally the day before demo.
  3. Who calls for pickup when the new toilet works.

If the homeowner rents, the crew can still use it. One standard unit with weekly service usually handles a small crew plus the family.

Whoever books the unit should also be the one who calls for pickup. That keeps the rental from running past the end of the job.

How does 28-day billing work for a remodel rental?

Long-term porta potty rentals bill per 28-day cycle, not per calendar month. Weekly pumping and cleaning are included. The rental renews every 28 days until you call for pickup, so a 5-week remodel covers 2 cycles. Call as soon as the new toilet works to avoid an extra cycle.

Each 28-day cycle starts on the delivery date. Service visits happen once a week during that time.

If your remodel runs long, you do not need to do anything. The rental just renews for another cycle.

The key step is the pickup call. A unit sitting unused in the driveway still bills until you call. Our full guide on 28-day billing walks through a worked example.

Here is a simple example. A remodel that starts on the 1st and wraps up on day 35 uses 2 cycles. Calling for pickup on day 30 instead of day 60 can save you a full cycle.

Quick answers

Can I get the porta potty the same day demo starts?

Same-day delivery is offered in many towns if you call early. It is easier to book delivery for the day before demo.

Will a porta potty smell near my house?

Weekly pumping and cleaning keep odor down. Placing the unit a short distance from windows and doors also helps.

Is there a sink in a standard unit?

A standard unit has hand sanitizer, not a sink. The deluxe flushing unit includes a sink, or you can add a hand-washing station.

Do I need a permit for a porta potty in my driveway?

A unit on your own private driveway usually needs no permit. Placing one on a street or sidewalk may need town approval, so check with your town first.
