Backyard Party Porta Potty Guide for Graduations and Birthdays
Hosting 50 or more guests at home can overwhelm one bathroom and a septic system. This guide covers how many units, where to put them and when to book.

Do I need a porta potty for a party at my house?
A porta potty makes sense for a home party with about 40 guests or more. One home bathroom gets a line fast, and heavy use can strain a septic system. A rented unit in the yard keeps guests outside and keeps your house clean during a graduation or birthday party.
Many homes around Manchester, Bedford and Goffstown run on septic. A septic tank is sized for daily family use, not 60 guests in one afternoon.
A porta potty also keeps foot traffic out of the house. You will not have muddy shoes on the carpet or guests wandering into bedrooms.
For a nicer feel, consider a deluxe flushing unit with a sink. Pair a standard unit with a hand-washing station if food is served.
Book early for May and June. Graduation weekends are the busiest time of year for home party rentals.
How many porta potties do I need for a backyard party?
Plan on 1 porta potty for every 50 guests at a party of about 4 hours. Add 1 more unit if alcohol is served or the party runs longer than 6 hours. A party of 100 guests with drinks usually needs 3 units, plus a hand-washing station near the food.
| Guests | Up to 4 hours | With alcohol or 6+ hours |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 50 | 1 unit | 2 units |
| 51–100 | 2 units | 3 units |
| 101–150 | 3 units | 4 units |
If many guests are kids or older adults, consider a wheelchair-accessible unit. It sits at ground level and has room to turn.

Kids drink a lot of juice and lemonade, so count them as full guests. If your party has a pool or bounce house, guests stay longer. In that case, plan for the larger number in the table.
Will a porta potty fit through my backyard gate?
A standard porta potty needs a gate or opening about 48 inches wide to roll through. Most single fence gates are 36 to 42 inches, which is too narrow. If your gate is small, place the unit in the driveway or side yard, or remove a fence panel before delivery day.
Measure your gate before you book. Measure the clear opening, not the post-to-post width.
- Double gates often open to 8 feet or more, which is plenty.
- Check for steps, steep slopes or soft lawn between the truck and the spot.
- The spot must be level and within about 15 feet of where the truck can park.
If the backyard does not work, a side yard near the driveway is a fine choice. Guests rarely mind a short walk.
Move cars, toys and grills out of the way before the truck arrives. A clear path speeds up delivery.
How far from the house should the porta potty be?
Place a party porta potty about 20 to 50 feet from the house and away from the food table. That distance keeps odor away from guests while staying easy to find. Set it on level ground, close to where the delivery truck can park, with the door facing the yard.
Too close to the deck and guests smell it. Too far and people head inside instead.
- Keep it downwind of the food and seating if you can.
- Leave a clear, lit path for evening guests. A string of lights or a solar stake works.
- Keep it away from where kids will be running games.
Respect your neighbors, too. Do not set the door facing their patio or right on the property line.
Mark the exact spot with a flag or cone before delivery. The driver will place it there, so you do not have to be home.
How do I keep party guests out of my house?
To keep guests out of the house, make the porta potty easy to find and close the house to party traffic. Put a simple sign at the door, such as "Restrooms in the yard." Lock interior doors and keep 1 bathroom open only for family or anyone who needs it.
Most guests will use the porta potty if they know where it is. Signs make a big difference.
- Post 2 or 3 arrow signs from the party area to the unit.
- Add a hand-washing station so guests have no reason to go inside to wash.
- Place a trash can next to the unit.
- Let a family member act as the go-to helper for older guests.
Keep the house bathroom available for someone with a mobility need, or rent a wheelchair-accessible unit.
When should the porta potty be delivered and picked up?
Most home parties book delivery on Friday and pickup on Monday. Event units are a flat rental for up to 7 days, so a weekend party fits easily. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead in May and June, when graduation parties fill the schedule across southern New Hampshire.
Friday delivery gives you Saturday morning to set up signs and lights. Monday pickup means no rush on Sunday cleanup.
You do not need to be home for either visit. Mark the spot, leave the gate open and the driver will text about 30 minutes before arrival.
Cancellation is free up to 24 hours before delivery. If the party moves because of rain, call as soon as you know.
For a party on a Sunday, the same Friday to Monday plan still works. The flat rental covers up to 7 days, so a few extra days cost you nothing more.
